A couple days ago I was able to do a photoshoot for four different individuals as part of a collaboration with hairstylist Elizabeth McHenry of Tower Barber & Hair Styling Shop. This is Leah Geerts. I really enjoyed getting to know this woman, hearing a bit of her story, how she came to reside in Charlotte and a little about her interior design business. I was unaware at the time of the shoot that she recently celebrated her one year anniversary of being cancer free!!!
Here’s some wonderful words by this amazing woman…
“I’m braver because I fought a giant and won.
I’m stronger because I had to be.
I’m happier because I’ve learned what matters.
I stand taller because I am a SURVIVOR!
June 19, 2015 will forever be a day that has rocked my world…as I was sitting in my kitchen I got the phone call with the results of the biopsy I had a couple of days before, from the lump I found a couple of weeks before that. The voice over the phone said “You have breast cancer, you have Invasive Ductal Carcinoma”. And at that moment…everything changed. I spent the next 6 months fighting to get my life back out of the clutches of cancer. The days, weeks and months following had been a blur of paper work, doctor appointments, poking, prodding, fear, body scans, chemo, chemo, and more chemo, tears, losing every hair on my body, surgery and rebuilding my body and then my life. December 10, 2015 I was declared cancer free, CANCER FREE! Flash forward 1 year and here we are…My cancerversary! I was asked to be a hair model, one year before I only had a hint of peach fuzz! My body is still healing from the reconstruction only a short time ago, my life is slowly getting back to normal, my business is thriving, my kids are starting their own amazing lives, my marriage is stronger than ever, my hair has grown back, I am happy and healthy and better than ever…I win! I survived! I hope that my pictures can serve as an inspiration to anyone that is in the midst of this battle. You can do it! You will be happy, healthy and have hair before you know it!
